Michael (Mike) Sanio F.ASCE, CAE, ENV-SP, at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), held the position of Executive Advisor on Sustainability where he was responsible for providing exceptional leadership on sustainability globally.
One of his most notable accomplishments was his work on establishing a sustainability program that led to the formation of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and the development of the Envision Rating System. Mike was also instrumental in the creation of a sustainable infrastructure standard, the development of ASCE’s new Sustainable Infrastructure Certificate Program, the creation of a series of successful International Conferences on Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI), and most recently in the formation of the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure.
Mike has a diverse background at local, national and international levels in the areas of environment and sustainable development. He has worked for the World Bank/Global Environment Facility where he was responsible for the development and leadership of the private sector strategy, the organization of international CEO forums and the initiation of innovative projects with the private sector, NGOs, development banks and governments. In addition to other positions, he has served as Executive Director to the World Engineering Partnership for Sustainable Development, Deputy to the President of WFEO-ComTech and as a consultant to the United National Environment Program, the United Nations Development Program. He was the lead author for the World Summit on Sustainable Development Science and Technology Major Group discussion paper leading to the 2002 meeting in Johannesburg.
Mike has numerous accomplishments to his credit including the management of the Global Anti-Corruption Education and Training (ACET) Program and the ASCE Task Committee on Global Principles for Professional Conduct that developed ASCE’s Anti-Corruption Policy.
Mike has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada; a Master Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin; and, received – Profesor Honorario al doctor from Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima 2009. He was the Vice President Reston Association, Director Sustainable Communities Award Foundation. Currently, he is a Member of Pan American Academy of Engineers – API and its Deputy Treasurer, a Fellow of ASCE, and an ENV-SP.
