The George Mason University Department of Computer Science is located in Fairfax, Virginia, near Washington DC, in the middle of one of the largest concentrations of computing industries in the world. Faculty in the department have research projects in the computing fields of data mining, databases, information security, information system, software engineering, and web development engineering.
The Department of Information and Software Engineering and the Department of Computer Science have merged effective January 1, 2008. The name of the new department is Computer Science. The following graduate programs and certificates from the former ISE department will remain intact and continue to operate under the administration of the new department:

In addition, the new Minor in Software Engineering will be administered by the merged department. Two Faculty Positions Available for Fall 2008
The CS department invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the areas of computer game development and bioengineering.
Two New Software Engineering Courses for Spring 2008
The Software Engineering group will offer two new undergraduate courses in the Spring semester. SWE 437, Software Testing and Maintenance, will be taught by Jeff Offutt and SWE 443, Software Architecture, will be taught by João Sousa. These new courses are part of the Minor in Software Engineering and are "CS related" courses for the Bachelor's in Computer Science degree.
New Requirement for Graduating with Graduate Certificates
Students must formally apply and be admitted to degree status for a graduate certificate at least one semester before completing the certificate requirements.
New for Fall 2007 - Minor in Software Engineering (SWE)
The minor in software engineering is designed to teach students to design and build high quality software. This minor is open to all majors.
Professor Carlotta Domeniconi Receives Prestigious NSF CAREER Award
Professor Carlotta Domeniconi has received the presitgous NSF CAREER Award. The Award is titled "Learning Local Feature Relevance for Pattern Classification and Clustering" and is in the amount of $400,000 for the period 2/1/2005 through 1/31/2010.

The Department is offering graduate classes in the MSIS and SWE Certificates at the new George Mason campus in Loudoun county.
